A cognitive-shuffling sleep app
Nyxlo reads you a slow, unpredictable stream of gentle words — random enough that your mind can't turn them into a story, calm enough that it stops chasing the ones that were keeping you awake.
The Science
Counting sheep fails for a simple reason: it's repetitive enough to be boring, but not disordered enough to stop your mind from wandering back to whatever's actually keeping you up.
Cognitive scientist Luc Beaudoin proposed a different approach — serial diverse imagining, popularly known as the "cognitive shuffle." You picture a short sequence of unrelated, neutral things: a stone, a kettle, a comet, a shoreline. Each one different enough that your brain can't stitch them into a plot, and calm enough that none of them can hook your attention.
That's the whole mechanism. Just enough mental activity to crowd out rumination, not enough coherence to keep you engaged. Nyxlo builds an entire app around it — reading the words aloud, so there's nothing left to actively do but listen.
